A new proposal from the Department of Homeland Security would make becoming a U.S. citizen far more expensive — and for many immigrant and refugee families, completely out of reach.

Under this plan:

• The cost to apply for citizenship would jump from $760 to $1,330.

• The fee to appeal a denied application would skyrocket by 78% — from $830 to $1,475.

• Fee waivers would disappear, meaning low‑income families would no longer have any affordable option at all.

These changes would shut the door on thousands of people who have lived, worked, and raised families in our communities for years. People following all the rules in good faith.

Every eligible immigrant and refugee deserves a fair, accessible path to citizenship — not a price tag that shuts them out.
